Constraint-Based Categorical Grammar

چکیده
We propose a generalization of Categorial Grammar in which lexical categories are defined by means of recur-sive constraints. In particular, the introduction of re-lational constraints allows one to capture the effects of (recursive) lexical rules in a computationally attractive manner. We illustrate the linguistic merits of the new approach by showing how it accounts for the syntax of Dutch cross-serial dependencies and the position and scope of adjuncts in such constructions. Delayed evaluation is used to process grammars containing recursive constraints.

Constraint Grammar As A Framework For Parsing Running Text
1. Outline Grammars which are used in parsers are often directly imported from autonomous grammar theory and descriptive practice that were not exercised for the explicit purpose of parsing. Parsers have been designed for English based on e.g. Government and Binding Theory, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, and LexicaI-Functional Grammar. We present a formalism to be used for parsing where ...
متن کاملA Source-Filter Model for Generative Metrics
This paper has two goals: first, to account for some metrical patterns attested in Russian iambic tetrameter; and second, to show how a grammar of categorically ranked constraints can make predictions about non-categorical phenomena. The general framework adopted here is that of generative metrics; this paper proposes a new constraint-based approach that builds most directly on the work of Frie...
متن کاملTransformation-Based Learning of Rules for Constraint Grammar Tagging
If we conceive of a Constraint Grammar as an ordered sequence of transformation rules of a particular kind – as reduction rules rather than replacement rules – the transformation-based learning method used to train Brill taggers can, with minor modifications, be used to train Constraint Grammar taggers as well. This paper makes a few observations based on this approach, and presents some initia...
متن کاملGradient syllable weight and weight universals in quantitative metrics*
Homeric Greek, Kalevala Finnish, Old Norse andMiddle Tamil are all languages in which weight is claimed to be exclusively binary in the poetic metrics. As I demonstrate through corpus studies of these traditions, the poets were sensitive to additional grades of weight, such that finely articulated continua of syllable weight can be inferred from distributional asymmetries in the metres. Across ...

This volume presents eight investigations into the grammar of Germanic languages. The approaches are based on the constraint-based architectures of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG, Bresnan, 1982a) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG, Pollard and Sag, 1994), which share the idea that declarative constraints are used to describe the syntactic, semantic, and other properties of linguist...
